Elon Musk (born 28 June 1971) is a South African-born entrepreneur who leads SpaceX and Tesla and founded the artificial intelligence company xAI. He is among the most prominent business figures of the early twenty-first century, known for electric vehicles, reusable rockets, and satellite internet, and for a public style that mixes technical ambition with frequent commentary on social media .
Musk was born in Pretoria and moved to North America as a young adult. His companies have reshaped two industries — automotive manufacturing and orbital launch — and his stated goals extend beyond them, to the settlement of Mars and the management of artificial intelligence. This entry covers his early life, his software ventures, SpaceX, Tesla, his newer companies, and his public positions .
Early life and education
Musk was born on 28 June 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa, to Errol Musk, an engineer, and Maye Musk, a model and dietitian. He read widely as a child, taught himself programming, and sold the code for a simple space game to a magazine at twelve .
He left South Africa in 1988, holding Canadian citizenship through his mother, and studied for two years at Queen's University in Ontario before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned degrees in physics and economics in 1997. He moved to California for graduate study in applied physics at Stanford University and left the programme after two days to start a company .
Zip2, X.com, and PayPal
In 1995 Musk and his brother Kimbal founded Zip2, which produced online city guides and maps for newspapers. Compaq bought it in 1999 for about $307 million, and Musk used his share to start X.com, an online bank, later that year .
X.com merged with Confinity in 2000, and the combined company's PayPal payment service proved more successful than its banking products. eBay acquired PayPal in 2002 for about $1.5 billion. The sequence established a pattern that recurred in Musk's later career: a software venture, an early sale, and a large stake reinvested in a more capital-intensive enterprise .
SpaceX
Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies in 2002 with the stated aim of lowering launch costs and eventually settling Mars. The company's first rocket, Falcon 1, failed three times before reaching orbit in September 2008; in December of that year NASA awarded a cargo resupply contract worth $1.6 billion, which kept the firm solvent .
Falcon 9 first flew in 2010, and Dragon became the first commercial spacecraft to berth with the International Space Station in 2012. In December 2015 a Falcon 9 first stage landed after launch, and the company went on to reuse boosters, reduce prices, and build the Starlink satellite network. Starship, a much larger vehicle, has been under flight test since 2023 .
Tesla
Musk joined Tesla Motors as chairman and lead investor in 2004 and became chief executive in 2008. The Roadster, launched in 2008, demonstrated that an electric car could be quick and desirable; the Model S, Model 3, and Model Y turned that demonstration into volume production .
Tesla built large battery factories in Nevada, Shanghai, Berlin, and Texas, and its market valuation passed one trillion dollars in 2021. Musk has described the company's purpose as accelerating the transition to sustainable energy, and it also sells battery storage and solar products. Production ramp-ups have repeatedly been difficult, and Musk has spoken publicly about the pressure they created .
xAI and other ventures
In 2016 Musk co-founded Neuralink, which is developing implantable brain-computer interfaces, and the Boring Company, which builds transport tunnels. In 2022 he acquired Twitter for about $44 billion and later renamed it X; in 2023 he founded xAI, whose chatbot Grok was released that year .
Musk has said that xAI's purpose is to understand the nature of the universe and to build artificial intelligence that is maximally curious rather than hostile. The company has assembled large training clusters and integrated its work with X. SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI remain his principal executive roles, and each is documented in company statements and regulatory filings .
Public profile and stated goals
Musk is one of the most followed individuals on social media and a frequent source of news through his posts. Time named him Person of the Year in 2021. He has repeatedly been ranked among the world's wealthiest people, a position that fluctuates with the valuations of his companies .
His public statements emphasise three themes: making humanity multiplanetary, replacing fossil fuels with electric transport and stored energy, and managing the risks of artificial intelligence. He has also warned about population decline and argued for lighter regulation of his industries. These positions are documented in interviews, filings, and posts; they describe stated intentions rather than outcomes .
