Lelouch is introduced as a Britannian prince exiled to Japan after his mother's assassination and his sister's injury. He hides at Ashford Academy as Lelouch Lamperouge, a bored student and compulsive chess player, until a chance encounter with C.C. gives him the Geass.
His rebellion is built on masks: Zero for the public, the student for his friends, the brother for Nunnally. The first season follows his attempt to turn a scattered resistance into the Black Knights and to force Britannia out of Area 11, while Suzaku rises inside the same empire.
